Some Interesting Facts about IPOs


  • The oldest known selling of the company's stakes dates back to the Roman era. It is known to historians that local contractors who used to provide supplies for Roman armies and performed related activities like the construction of monuments and other civic structures used to work in groups (referred to as publicans) and each one has a stake in the overall dealing. They used to sell their stakes to other contractors or the general public.


  • The Dutch East India Company was the first known company to issue shares to the general public (1602).

  • Saudi Aramco (Saudi Arabian Oil Company - formerly Arabian-American Oil Company ) has been the largest IPO in the world to date amounting to around 25B USD.

  • China is the leading issuer of IPOs in the world followed by the United States (as per data available online on March 2020).
